The Gala Cinema, Durham City Arts, 2020 Vision and Durham County Council have joined forces to bring the first ever artists’ film festival to Durham City, made possible with funding from Arts Council England.
Beyond Film will celebrate artists’ film and video work, with a focus on new and emerging artists inspired by the theme of journeys. The event takes place on November 22nd and 23rd at various locations throughout the city.
The Gala Theatre and Cinema will become a hub of activity over the course of the weekend as Newcastle’s Star and Shadow Cinema host a panel discussion and a workshop. Panellists will discuss the historical lineage of artists’ film and why artists chose to work within the medium. Star and Shadow will also lead a workshop that will encourage participants to make their own film. A programme of historical artists’ film from the Independent Cinema Office will be introduced by leading expert George Clark.
This programme includes the famous Un Chien Andalou by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali as well as work by Jan Svankmajer and Walerian Borowczyk. Workplace Gallery will curate an evening of films, including work by Anri Sala, Darren Banks and recent graduates from Sunderland University. Artist Marcus Coates will host an evening of events in which he will screen and discuss his key works.
As well as the work of professional artists, the Beyond Film team is asking for submissions in three categories; Young People, Recent Graduates and Professional Artists (artists/film-makers who graduated more than five years ago). The Beyond Film panel will select the best work from the submissions to screen in a mobile cinema located in Millennium Place. Submissions should be sent to Victoria Manifold, Film Development Officer at the Gala Cinema.
Mark Robinson, Executive Director, Arts Council England, North East said:
“This is a unique opportunity for artists and filmmakers in Durham to show off their local talent. It will also enable young people to participate and learn more about digital art from professionals in the field.”
